Indian opposition leader Rahul Gandhi was detained for the third time in two days on Wednesday, 7 October 2026, during a protest demanding the resignation of the election chief over a controversial revision of voter lists. Gandhi and other opposition lawmakers were apprehended by police as they marched toward Jantar Mantar, a designated protest site in New Delhi. A live feed on the YouTube channel of Gandhi’s Congress Party showed police taking him into a vehicle and driving away, while authorities also detained several other opposition lawmakers and protesters. Speaking before his detention on Wednesday, Gandhi said protesters showed up unannounced after Delhi police stopped their gathering the previous day.

There was no immediate comment from the police on the detentions. The fresh arrests follow Tuesday's demonstrations, when Gandhi, his lawmaker sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, and other parliamentarians were stopped by security forces roughly half a kilometre away from the poll panel’s offices on Parliament Street. Opposition organizers stated that 237 MPs from various parties participated in the Tuesday march, during which Gandhi stood on a police barricade waving the national flag before being forced into a police bus. Following their brief detention and subsequent release on Tuesday, Gandhi and other Congress party leaders entered the Akashvani Bhawan compound to continue a sit-in protest that extended into the evening.

Controversial Voter Roll Revisions and Internal Election Commission Friction

The unrest stems from the Election Commission's Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls, an exercise that commenced in the eastern state of Bihar in June 2025 before expanding nationwide. About 969 million people were eligible to vote in the 2024 election. Critics contend the process requires confusing documents that risk disenfranchising eligible voters, particularly marginalized and minority communities such as Muslims, with protesters alleging the changes disproportionately removed voters who support opposition parties while preserving or adding voters more likely to back Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s party. Election Commission data indicates that voter rolls could shrink by as much as 30 percent in certain regions. The poll body has so far removed more than 130 million names from the voter lists, with millions appealing the removals.

Public anger intensified following an investigative report published last month by The Indian Express. The report stated that two of the Election Commission's three members, election commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi, had formally objected at least 14 times over a 10-month period to decisions and orders issued in the commission's name without their knowledge. The disputed decisions reportedly involved additions and deletions from voter rolls, database access, and data security.

The Election Commission defended its institutional procedures, asserting that differing internal views are normal and that all final decisions were ultimately adopted unanimously. The poll body maintained that the revision drive aims solely to eliminate duplicate, deceased, and ineligible entries, as well as foreign illegal immigrants, while ensuring electoral integrity. On Friday prior to the march, the commission directed officials to reinstate eligible voters inadvertently omitted from the rolls.

Political Battlegrounds and Supreme Court Intervention

Opposition parties have accused the Election Commission of acting at the behest of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party to manipulate future outcomes. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge asserted that the election body operates as a puppet of the government. Congress leaders outlined three non-negotiable demands: Kumar's resignation, the complete cancellation of the revision exercise, and a return to paper ballot voting.

Ruling party officials strongly rejected the allegations. BJP MP and national spokesperson Sambit Patra accused the opposition of manufacturing a coordinated campaign to undermine constitutional institutions and orchestrate a change in power through anarchy.

Some opposition parties, particularly the Congress, are making a concerted effort to change the government and install Rahul Gandhi in power. They are deliberately attacking India’s democracy and constitutional institutions.

The controversy has also drawn the attention of India's judiciary. The Supreme Court ordered both the federal government and the election authority to respond to a legal petition alleging that CEC Gyanesh Kumar bypassed his fellow commissioners when executing key administrative decisions. While the court indicated that statutory decisions must be reached unanimously or by majority vote and could potentially be set aside if procedural rules were violated, it declined to suspend Kumar immediately pending a review of official records and the commission's formal response. The Supreme Court is scheduled to examine relevant administrative records during subsequent hearings next week.

Growing Youth Mobilization Presents New Political Test

The street demonstrations have intersected with youth-led movements, including the satirical Cockroach Janta Party, which organized protests in Delhi and Mumbai and called for renewed mass mobilizations. These demonstrations present a new political challenge to Modi midway into his third term, arriving just months after similar protests led by the Cockroach Janta Party youth movement forced the resignation of his education minister over exam paper leaks. The Cockroach protests, cited as one of the most visible signs of public dissent against Modi’s government in recent years, reflected growing anger over job scarcity, corruption, and a lack of government accountability.
